The Summer Program of the Academy on Human Rights and
Humanitarian Law is the only program in the world that offers
three weeks of intensive summer courses in English and Spanish.
Every summer the Academy hosts over 25 visiting world-renowned
scholars and activists who teach courses on topics including
regional human rights approaches; the United Nations;
international criminal tribunals; economic, social and cultural
rights; women's rights; terrorism and human rights; and
international humanitarian law.
Participants in the Summer Program may choose between enrolling
in the courses for academic credit and earn up to seven ABA
credit or for a Certificate of Attendance. This design allows
for the fullest participation of all individuals interested in
human rights, from law students to seasoned professionals. Each
year, the Academy offers intensive, specialized courses on
regional human rights law, universal human rights law,
international humanitarian law, as well as other thematic
courses. In addition to classes, the Academy offers panel
discussions, site visits to national and international
institutions in Washington, D.C., conferences by distinguished
lecturers and human rights practitioners, and a human rights
film series.
The intense format of the Summer Program brings together
professionals with limited time who otherwise would not be able
to participate in this type of professional development. In
drawing together internationally recognized professors and
participants with diverse life and work experience, the Summer
Program creates a unique and exclusive opportunity to learn
about human rights.
