Greetings All,

This past Saturday I was working in my garage when a guy walked up the
driveway and asked if I would like to have the carpet in one room of my
house super-cleaned, absolutely free of charge and with no obligation. And
I thought the days of the door to door vacuum cleaner salesman were
gone. So I'm thinking about it and suddenly the guy changes the subject
entirely. "Hey, that's the argument I always use when I'm talking to
people about the death penalty," he said, referring to the "The Death
Penalty: What Would Jesus Do?" bumper sticker on Beth's Geo Prism. Yeah,
he's a real salesman, I'm thinking to myself. So I explain that just ten
days ago we had all of the carpets in our new rental home professionally
cleaned - except in one room where we had all of the still-unpacked boxes
stacked. I agreed to let the guy come in and demonstrate his machine in
that room. So he calls a young woman who quickly arrives to do the
demonstration. And guess what? It's a small world! Not only is she also
a lifelong abolitionist, but her mom actually is so involved that she went
to the NCADP conference in Texas! (I checked her name in the NJADP
database - not there yet...). Smile. So I watch the demonstration, and
then she calls the guy back to make the sale. Of course, they want almost
$2,000 for this "home cleaning system." "Sorry," I tell them, "it's just
not in the budget." They did the whole shtick on me, eventually lowering
the price to $1,099. I hated to disappoint them, so in exchange for their
time and for me signing them up on the New Jersey database so that we can
call them when it is time for them to call their legislators, I sent them
packing with a t-shirt, buttons and bumper stickers. They didn't sell me a
Kirby, but they agreed to be walking billboards for abolition!

KEEPING UP TO DATE ON THE ISSUE

There are a number of good sources for staying up to the minute on what's
happening in the world of Abolition. One is the Abolish list:

THE DEATH PENALTY INFORMATION CENTER

Another great resource is the "What's New" piece of the Death Penalty
Information Center's web site, which is regularly updated, and once a week
all of the updates are sent to a list. Check it out at
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org

STATE LISTS

There is no one digest of State group list-servs, BUT, most states provide
sign-up info via their web pages or blogs. Look for your state list at
http://ncadp.org/affiliate_links_state.html

BLOGS

I like to think that I'm one of the early bloggers. If you think about
CUADPUpdate has been in the style of blogging, except its a list and not a
Blog. One of these days I'll catch up and turn this into a Blog. But for
now....

GO HERE: http://www.deathpenaltyusa.blogspot.com/

and scroll down on the left side to see the most complete list of
abolition-related blogs that I am aware of....
