Friends,

The Florida Supreme Court heard oral arguments today on the lethal
injection-based appeals of Mark Schwab and Ian Lightbourne. I watched
the proceedings on remote video and the article below from the Miami
Herald web site seems to sum up the highlights accurately, so here it
is:

If there are no executions this year in Florida, it will be the first
time in 15 years that we had a year without an execution.

Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Along with former Florida State Prison Warden, Ron McAndrew and Equal
Justice USA's Jeanne Rewa and many others, I attended the Gainesville
Citizens for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (GCADP) Faith in Action
event. Father Dennis O'Neill spoke of his previous responsibilities
and experiences carrying out executions as Warden of the Florida State
Prison and why he is now calling for the aboilition of the Death
Penalty.

The event was well attended and Fr. O'Neill was an effective speaker.
Reporters were in attendance. His words and story have now reached
many thousands of people and will continue to spread. A successful
event can inspire and educate many people in your community and around
the state. Plan to hold an event in your area. FADP will help you
network and notify others...and more.

The following is a news report on the event from the Gainesville Sun.

"For through violence, you may murder a murderer, but you can't murder
murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you can't establish
truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can't murder
hate. Darkness cannot put out darkness, only light can do that." Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
